This form of the Order of Christian Initiation is intended for children who were not baptized as infants, or who are baptized but have not received any formal formation in the faith.
Children can participate in OCIC when they have attained the use of reason (age 7 +).
Children seek Christian initiation either at the direction of their parents or guardians, or with parental permissions, on their own initiative.
Such children are capable of receiving and nurturing a personal faith and of recognizing an obligation in conscience. But, they cannot yet be treated as adults because, at this stage of their lives, they are dependent on their parents or guardians and are still strongly influenced by their companions and their social surroundings.
Children beginning this process are placed into regular Sunday Religious Education classes with their peers.
During the first academic year, these children will complete the Rite of Acceptance during a Sunday Mass.
During their second academic year they will continue in classes with their peers and also attend classes together for immediate preparation for their Sacraments of Initiation.
All OCIC children who are ready and prepared will receive the sacraments at the Easter Vigil in their second academic year of classes.
Enrollment for OCIC occurs at the same time as enrollment for Sunday Religious Education classes. Parents may register new students by calling the Catechetical Ministry Office 619-463-6011, or at our online faith formation registration page. Please make sure to let us know that your child(ren) requires OCIC formation.
Regular attendance at Mass and Sunday classes, as well as active participation in class discussions and activities.
All children need a qualified sponsor who is an active member in the Catholic Church (either at Santa Sophia or at another parish) who will be able to be present at the Easter Vigil. There will be various activities for the sponsor and child to complete together throughout the year. If the family is unable to find a qualified sponsor for the child, we will help find a good match in the parish.
Yes! In many cases when a family is joining the church together, there is more than one child involved. It it highly encouraged to enroll all children at the same time.
